Report of Avian Influenza (H5N8) in free ranging and migratory birds at Mysuru Zoo premises.

On 28/12/2016, 1 Spot Billed Pelican and 3 Greylag Goose died in Ponds at Mysuru Zoo premises.   Samples were sent to Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Bengaluru.  On 30/12/2016, 1 Spot Billed Pelican and 1 Greylag Goose died in the same pond.  The carcass were sent to IAH&VB, Bengaluru for further investigation.  The above said are migratory and free ranging birds.

On 3/1/2017, we received a report of National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) from the Commissioner, Dept. of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Karnataka, that Avian Influenza (H5N8) is confirmed in free ranging and migratory birds died at Mysuru Zoo premises.

Hence, an emergency meeting was conducted on 3/1/2017 with the following members:

Strict biosecurity measures are in place.  As per the recommendations of the meeting and in the interest of public health and zoo animals of Mysuru Zoo, the Zoo administration has decided to close the Zoo from 4/1/2017 to 2/2/2017.
